Head to Head: Immigration
Orbis compares democratic candidates' proposed policies
Issue date: 10/2/07 Section: News/Features
CHRIS DODD:
Like most of his Democratic colleagues, Dodd is generally supportive of a Guest Worker program and has voted to offer Social Security participation for undocumented workers.
The Connecticut Senator also voted in favor of the Secure Fence Act of 2006 which created 700 miles of new fence along the Mexican border. Dodd argues that a secure border should be an important goal for the Federal Government, but that the Mexican Government ought to be involved as well.
While Dodd voted to allow participants in the Guest Worker Program to have a "path to citizenship", however convoluted and arduous, he continues to oppose amnesty for resident illegal immigrants.
BILL RICHARDSON:
...is a vehement opponent of building a wall on the Mexican border, declaring on more than one occasion that erecting a fence on the border "is not America" and that it "divides families and does not solve the problem." The "problem", according to Richardson, would be better addressed by increased militarization of the border and doubling border patrol.
While Richardson has consistently argued that immigrants should be guaranteed human services, he also opposes automatic citizenship for the children of immigrants and as governor of New Mexico he declared martial law on the Mexican border in 2006.
Richardson also opposes amnesty, that is, granting legal status to some 12 million undocumented immigrants currently residing in the United States.
HILLARY CLINTON:
The majority of Clinton's comments on the issue focus on what she sees as a "national security problem." She has also indicated that it is important that we begin to bring immigrants "out of the shadows" and to sanction employers who employ undocumented workers.
Clinton opposes declaring English the official language of the US government and supports both the Guest Worker program and allowing undocumented immigrants to participate in Social Security.
Nonetheless, she declared recently on WABC radio that she is "adamantly against illegal immigrants." Clinton is also a staunch opponent of amnesty for undocumented immigrants.

"...Clinton is also a staunch opponent of amnesty for undocumented immigrants..."
But at the same she and her husband are in the pockets
of the wealthiest man in the world (Carlos Slim), who,
